How to read this release: The current national data establish the pace and depth of business AI diffusion. FIR then tests freight deployments against a stricter progression: announcement, pilot, contracted deployment, workflow integration, scaled use and measured operating outcome.

AI use is broadening across U.S. businesses, but most adoption remains limited in functional scope. Larger firms lead, and verified freight deployments continue to face integration, data-quality and resource barriers.

Adoption is growing—but size matters

Overall AI use ranged from 17% to 20% between December 2025 and May 2026, while expected six-month use ranged from 20% to 23%. Adoption reached 37% among firms with at least 250 employees and 32% among firms with 100–249 employees, indicating a meaningful scale advantage in capital, data, integration and change management.

Use does not equal transformation

Among adopting firms, 57% used AI in three or fewer functions and 65% limited worker use to three or fewer tasks. Writing, document analysis and information search led task use. Only 2% of firms reported AI-related employment decreases, while 66% used AI solely to augment work. FIR therefore reads current diffusion as operational assistance more often than wholesale process replacement.

Freight integration remains the proving ground

USDOT’s 2026 DrayFLEX implementation findings show why freight adoption should be judged beyond software availability: disparate formats, unreliable external feeds, limited carrier resources and third-party support slowed integration. A functioning pilot is not equivalent to repeatable network-scale value.

What would strengthen the reading

  • More freight-specific deployment counts with consistent denominators.
  • Documented movement from pilot to contracted, integrated and scaled use.
  • Measured changes in cost, dwell, empty miles, safety, service or labor productivity.
  • Evidence that results persist beyond one facility, customer or demonstration.

From announcement to proven scale

The FIR Adoption Ladder helps decision-makers separate market attention from operational maturity. Each step reflects stronger evidence that a technology is moving from promise to dependable freight use.

A capability or partnership is public, but operational use has not been verified.

2. Pilot

Testing is underway in a limited fleet, facility, workflow or customer environment.

3. Deployed

A customer or operator has placed the technology into active production.

4. Integrated

The technology is connected to core workflows and used beyond a stand-alone test.

5. Proven at scale

Use has expanded across operations with repeatable, measured results over time.

Sources and methodology

FIR method: Evidence is classified by adoption stage and outcome depth. National business statistics provide context but are not presented as freight-sector penetration. FIR does not count announcements as deployments or deployments as proven scale.
