How to use this reading: Begin with the national demand signal, then test it against the railroad, corridor, terminal, commodity and customer conditions affecting the actual shipment. RailTempo separates volume from service because a busy network is not necessarily an unreliable network—and a fluid national average can still conceal a local problem.

Intermodal, carload and total U.S. rail traffic all exceeded the comparable 2025 week. Seven of ten reported carload commodity groups increased.

Confidence: Moderate

The traffic direction is supported by broad weekly comparisons and year-to-date growth. Confidence is not rated high because a single national week cannot establish lane-level service, capacity absorption or persistence.

What changed

The latest week shows a broader demand expansion than the August 8 observation, when U.S. intermodal traffic was up 4.1%, carloads were up 1.8% and combined traffic was up 3.0% year over year. By August 22, the corresponding comparisons had increased to 5.0%, 3.2% and 4.2%. This is a two-week confirmation—not proof of a durable acceleration—and it should be tested against subsequent releases.

Where the strength came from

Intermodal remained the larger source of U.S. rail volume, but the latest gain was not confined to containers and trailers. Metallic ores and metals, chemicals and grain produced the largest reported carload increases. Motor vehicles and parts declined, creating an important counter-signal: the network can strengthen in aggregate while an industrially important commodity weakens.

What it means

For shippers considering rail or intermodal, the demand picture supports early checks on equipment, terminal capacity, drayage windows and inventory protection rather than assuming that national growth will translate into service failure. For railroads and intermediaries, simultaneous intermodal and carload gains increase the importance of distinguishing productive density from emerging network friction.

What could change the interpretation

  • Confirmation: continued multiweek volume growth accompanied by stable or improving train speed, terminal dwell, original estimated arrival performance and industry spot/pull execution.
  • Warning: rising traffic paired with slower speeds, longer dwell, missed local service windows or deterioration concentrated at major gateways.
  • Reversal: broad weakening across both intermodal and economically sensitive carload groups rather than a decline isolated to one commodity.

Current status: New STB series began July 8, 2026; history is not yet long enough for a stable FIR benchmark.

Exceptions and resilience

Weather, border conditions, recrews, cars held, local cancellations, corridor events and safety disruptions help distinguish broad pressure from isolated operating exceptions.

Current status: Used as diagnostic evidence, not blended mechanically into demand.

It is not a carrier service grade, price forecast or claim about every lane. FIR will not publish a composite RailTempo score until the service series has sufficient history for comparability, normalization and stability testing.
